Neatly straddling the genres of chill pop, surf rock and dance and skilfully combining features of each, Bluey Green’s latest single “Morning Sunshine” is a relaxed take on the positive message we’re all needing to remind ourselves of in 2021: as Bluey Green’s Mitch Horton sings, “When it gets late, in the stillness of the dark, you’re lying wide awake, just know there’s always another day.”

Produced by Mark Perkins (aka artist/producer Merk) and drenched in elements of surf culture and Mitch’s 90s upbringing, “Morning Sunshine” combines Mark’s skilful production with Mitch’s songwriting prowess. The minimal, carefully orchestrated guitar and synth-driven instrumentation balances well with Mitch’s laid-back, authentic and honest vocals and lyrics, and the track’s beats hover between a retro Casiotone feel and weightier, punchy kick-snare combos that transition in and out with the dynamics of the song, thickening and grounding the beat to suit.

Accompanying the single, the newly-released, rather extraordinary little gem of a music video resulted from Mitch trawling the New Zealand Archives for surf footage and stumbling instead across a 1970s, young Sam Neill-directed skiing video that Mitch believes was originally commissioned by Tourism New Zealand to promote South Island ski fields. Drawn to its colours and cinematography, Mitch gained permission to use the footage to create the music video, and the result is both cathartic and uplifting: it’s a perfect match to the track’s dreamy and hopeful feel.

With its upbeat title and message of optimism, “Morning Sunshine” could be considered something of a quintessential ‘summer jam’, and there’s a tidy juxtaposition between this and the video being set in the middle of New Zealand’s (still glorious) winter snow. It’s a contrast that serves as an ideal foil to the meaning of the song, bringing it to life beautifully: “Morning Sunshine” is a song about choosing to find the sun rather than becoming overwhelmed by those metaphorical ‘rainy (or cold and snowy!) days’ that life brings.

What better reflection of this than the bliss of skiing the New Zealand slopes in winter’s sunshine?

Bluey Green is currently based in Mount Maunganui, and “Morning Sunshine” is the first single from his debut EP. Watch this space!
